Get back to nature, if even for a little while

If there is one commonality between the lives most of us live it is that in many cases they are disconnected from nature. Much of what we do is centered indoors—living, working, driving, eating, socializing, and sleeping. Aside from the occasional camping trip or day at the beach, we tend to live very “sheltered” lifestyles in term of exposure to the outdoors. One way to make strong contact with the grounding properties of nature is to be outside among the trees, birds, water, dirt, and hills. This does not have to consist of a survivalist trip where you pack food and supplies in a backpack and disconnect from your life for a week. There are less extreme ways to make contact with nature.

Get out. Visit the park, forest, beach, desert, hiking trail, or mountains—wherever is closest to you—and allow yourself to let loose and take part in nature.

Make nice with the bugs. Do not let the bugs creep you out; just give them their space.

Get dirty. Do not fight getting dusty, sweaty, or dirty. It will wash off.

Dine al fresco. Set down a blanket and eat outdoors sitting on the sand, dirt, or grass.

Allow your hair to blow in the wind. Spend no time worrying if your hair looks unkempt or frizzy, or tie it back minus the same concerns.

Listen to the birds. Watch birds fly around and listen to them sing. Monitor the pattern and pitch of their song.

Let your little piggies wiggle free. If the terrain permits, kick off your shoes and walk barefoot on the grass or sand.

Rock and roll. Walk on the dirt and hear rocks crunch beneath you. Or, roll up your pant legs and walk in the water, or through the waves, at a local body of water.

Study the trees. Look at and up a tree and see how the limbs grow up and out toward the sun and sky.

Stop and smell the roses. Or, if you wish smell the jasmine, orange blossoms or whatever else may be in bloom.

Try to spend a day, or at least a few consecutive hours, disconnected from your phone, electronic communication, or a computer. Create a time for stillness and listening—both inwardly and outwardly—and use this time for that purpose. There does not need to be constant noise in your life. You will be fine in the quiet and may actually come back with a new perspective on concerns in your life.
