Looking for a total-body workout that combines nearly every hot fitness trend and has its own theme song? You may have heard of the R.I.P.P.E.D. workout at local health clubs, and now you can check out the phenomenon at home with the DVD “RIPPED Total Body Challenge” (Acacia, $16.99).
R.I.P.P.E.D. -- Resistance, Intervals, Power, Plyometrics, Endurance, and Diet – was created by husband-and-wife team Terry and Tina Shorter, who caught the fitness bug in the late 1990s. They were also part of the cast of the Turbo Jam workout DVDs.
This is where that theme song comes in -- as a singer-songwriter, Terry Shorter wanted to combine his love of music with fitness, so the DVD features his original songs and singing. Many workouts, like Turbo Jam, Zumba and Hip-Hop Abs put music at the forefront, but the R.I.P.P.E.D. workout is a little different in that it’s not as dance oriented – in some respects, it reminds us a little of Body Pump.
The DVD is great for beginners, in that you can choose to watch a short instructional video before each section, which is broken up into Resistance, Intervals, Power, Plyometrics, and Endurance sections. You’ll really only need to view these introductions once as it’s easy to catch on to the moves.
In total, the workout is around 50 minutes and includes strength training and aerobic work, featuring plyo and kickboxing moves. All you need is a set of moderate-weight dumbbells.
There are a couple of modifiers in the background exercisers – one for beginners and one to follow if you want to kick things up a notch, so the DVD works for all fitness levels.
