Yoga claims for therapeutic benefits abound, but its effectiveness for maintaining a healthy back and for dealing with back pain has strong scientific support.
The precise alignments, the modifications, and the continued studies of its creator mean Iyengar yoga in particular gets studied often. B.K.S. Iyengar continues to modify and adapt poses to today’s students, using his knowledge from more than 75 years of teaching.
Iyengar’s teachers study with him directly and often, and Los Angeles has a relative wealth of such teachers. One such is Marla Apt, who is offering a workshop, Yoga for a Healthy Back, on Sunday, Feb. 24, at YogaWorks Westwood through Iyengar Yoga Therapeutics. Marla, who is on the group’s board, is a senior intermediate level certified Iyengar teacher.
One study focusing on Iyengar yoga, published in 2009, found increased functionality and reduced back pain, depression and medication use. A large study from 2012 used Iyengar yoga and another style and found yoga to be a cost effective intervention based on improved quality of life.
Marla writes for Yoga Journal and has been involved in medical research studies at UCLA on yoga for depression, anxiety and irritable bowel syndrome. She created the first yoga therapy content for the UCLA medical school.
About the workshop: Sunday, Feb. 24; 2-4 p.m.; fee, $45; YogaWorks Westwood, 1256 Westwood Blvd, LA, CA 90024.
