You don’t have to wait until Memorial Day or Veterans Day to pay your respects to the men and women who risk their lives in defense of our nation; and while Christmas and Thanksgiving are great opportunities to collect food and toiletries for our troops, they appreciate donations year-round.
Earlier this month, a group of Upper School students from Gerstell Academy collected, packed and transported over 30 boxes of food and household items to Fisher House in Bethesda, MD. The Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers, so that members of the military and their families, who are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, will have a place to stay. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.
The Gerstell students are members of the school's Community Action Group, comprised of Upper School students who wish to take an active leadership role in the community. The group was instrumental in organizing the collection of goods and delivering the boxes to the Bethesda House where they used the opportunity to tour the facility and meet some of the guests.
The students also took time to express their appreciation for our veterans and their families, because the time is always right to thank our military for their service.
