If you love German cinema, you're in for a treat. Not only does Bangkok's German Film Week 2012 begin on February 20th at Siam Paragon's movieplex, but admission to all of the films in the festival is free.
The festival is being held, in part, to celebrate 150 years of German-Thai relations. There will be one film shown every evening at 7pm, for a total of seven films over the seven day festival. Tickets are free to anyone who wants to see a movie but, of course, it's first-come first-served, so organizers are suggesting you book a seat in advance.
Movies in the German Film Week 2012 include Krabat, originally released in 2008, and Die Fremde (When We Leave), the story of a Turkish women who leaves her abusive husband and returns to her traditional Muslim family's home in German.
All movies are in German with English subtitles. You can call 0 2287 0942 to reserve free seats, or find more information on the Goethe Institute's website.
As only a miniscule number of Thais actually speak German, chances of getting tickets are probably quite good, as you're likely to be competing with German natives for free tickets more than you are with Thais.
However, as Siam Paragon's movieplex only holds a couple of hundred people in the theater being used, don't leave it to chance, but book early. Movies like Die Fremde, which has won a number of awards, are likely to be popular, so will fill up fast.
