Artist for Peace and Justice (APJ) Board Member Ben Stiller and founder Paul Haggis brought together celebrities Gerard Butler, Demi Moore, Olivia Wilde and Susan Sarandon in Port Au Prince, Haiti on Sunday, April 11 to discuss the relief efforts and how to maximize celebrity involvement.
Artists for Peace and Justice, established in early 2009, is a fundraising effort founded by Paul Haggis and friends that encourages peace and social justice and addresses issues of poverty and enfranchisement in communities around the world. The organization’s immediate goal is to build schools to serve the poorest areas of Haiti, providing an education, hot meals, clean drinking water and regular medical treatments to the children living in the slums. Since the earthquake earlier this year, APJ has raised millions of dollors in support of emergency relief and long-term recovery of the country.
APJ is merging with Ben Stiller’s Haitian school initiative in efforts to consolidate the rebuilding of the earthquake damaged country's schools.
Butler and the others present at Sunday’s meeting also discussed how more schools can be built in the country.
In January, Butler was among the celebrities stepping in to help with the relief efforts in Haiti, pledging $50,000 per year for five years toward building schools in Haiti.
