Geraldine Ferraro, a political trail-blazing former U.S. Democratic vice presidential candidate, will be laid to rest today. The funeral service will be at 9:30AM EST at the Church of Saint Vincent Ferrer in Manhattan, New York City. The service will be private, for family and friends only, with no press coverage.
The family's statement reads:
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to one of the following organizations: The Jerome Lipper Multiple Myeloma Research Center at Dana-Farber; The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation; The Religious Order of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Tarrytown; and City Meals on Wheels.
Geraldine Ferraro passed at the age of 75 on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Massachusetts General Hospital following a lengthy battle with blood cancer. Her political career defined her as she was a U.S. Representative and the first woman from a major political party - Democratic Party - to be nominated for vice president. She was chosen to be on Walter Mondale's ticket in 1984. The two were defeated by Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Prior to her political career she was a teacher and a lawyer.
