Douglas County Jail

Ryeeah Hatcher, 27, of Douglasville was arrested on Tuesday by Douglas County deputies and charged with stealing and killing a neighbor's six-month-old puppy by slamming the defenseless pooch against a tree reported ajc.com.

Neighbors witnessed Hatcher stealing the puppy named "Sunshine" and stuffing him in her backpack. As the puppy cried out in fear, Hatcher tried to get away, but neighbors surrounded her in an attempt to keep her from escaping until authorities arrived.

When Hatcher figured she had no way to escape, she smashed the backpack against a tree with the puppy in it. The puppy died.

After a struggle by authorities, Hatcher was arrested and charged with willful obstruction of law enforcement, theft by taking, and aggravated animal cruelty.

According to the Daily News, authorities question Hatcher's mental state. She is now being held at the Douglas County jail in lieu of $12,000 bond.

Rest in peace Sunshine.
