Georgia watering ban lifted

Today the Georgia Environmental Protection Division announced that the watering ban that had been in place since May 2008 has been lifted.  The watering rules have now reverted to an odd-even schedule with no time limits on when watering may occur.  The Georgia EPD does however encourage watering wisely, between the hours of 4 pm and 10 am.  The agency suggests that between 10 am and 4 pm watering is inefficient.

During the hottest hours of the day, water is more prone to evaporate from the air and top soil.  Because water is more expensive these days, it is best for Atlantans’ wallets as well as their landscapes to water between midnight and 10 am, since it is still quite hot during the late afternoon and early evening hours.

The odd-even schedule dictates that homeowners with odd street addresses may water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays while those with even street addresses may water on Monday, Wednesdays and Saturdays.  Those with food gardens are exempt from these rules as well as those with newly installed landscapes.  New landscapes installed by a professional landscaper may be watered any day of the week, but common sense should be exercised in terms of the hours when watered.

Governor Sonny Perdue was quoted in a press release posted on the Georgia EPD site : “Georgians have seen the most severe drought on record, and have proven their ability to conserve and manage our state’s most precious resource,” said Governor Perdue “We have become more educated about water conservation, and have taken significant steps towards ensuring a long term solution. I believe Georgians will continue to use our water resources wisely under this new outdoor watering schedule.”
