Nicholas Shelby, a Georgia Tech sophomore and mechanical engineering major, is one of YouTube’s rising stars and an inspiration to parents and college students alike. The passionate and spirited student delivered a rousing welcome speech to students like no other. Since it was posted on Monday, Shelby’s speech has gone viral. On Aug. 23, combined YouTube views topped the two million mark and the number is rising rapidly.
Dressed in a traditional black cap and gown, Shelby begins his speech by saying, “We chose Georgia Tech because we want to do the impossible.” He goes on to challenge freshman to reach beyond the achievements of previous students. As the speech amps up, so does the music – “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Shelby, certainly a force to be reckoned with, is both high-powered and inspirational during his speech. He exclaims proudly, “Georgia Tech is full of many traditions, but the one I am proudest of and find most exciting is our tradition of excellence.”
Trying to inspire his fellow classmates, Shelby encourages them to strive for excellence at Georgia Tech, one of the hardest colleges to gain admittance. “Embrace yourselves for a hell of a ride on your way to become a hell of an engineer,” he adds. In closing, he states passionately, “If you want to change the world, you’re at Georgia Tech. You can do that.”
The stunned group of freshman award Shelby with a resounding round of applause and a standing ovation. Even the faculty are pleased. His speech clearly has to be one of the most powerful welcome speeches ever. According to CNN, roughly 4,000 were in attendance and surely inspired to go out and conquer their courses. The Huffington Post wrote about the speech and said, “If you don’t find yourself inspired, and possibly even wanting to attend Georgia Tech, after watching this video, then nothing in this world is bound to do so.”
