Georgia Tech offensive line coach Todd Spencer appears to be on his way out. Spencer, who was suspended for the 2011 season opener due to making phone calls against NCAA policy in the off-season, is not expected to return to Paul Johnson's coaching staff in 2012 according to multiple reports.
Georgia Tech has not made an official announcement about the possible coaching staff change but the Atlanta Journal Constitution suggests that if the change is impending then the timing could not come at a worse time, with National Signing Day just days away.
"Coaching changes typically occur immediately following the season or after signing day," Georgia Tech beat reporter for Atlanta Journal Constitution Ken Sugiua writes. "In the days leading up to signing day, which takes place Wednesday, the last thing a team wants to project to prospects is any sort of change or instability."
Spencer had been discovered to make 14 recruiting calls last year that were deemed to be in violation of the NCAA's rules.
Spencer has been a part of Paul Johnson's coaching staff for Johnson's entire tenure at Georgia Tech and at Navy, dating back to 1997. Spencer was already on Navy's coaching staff when Johnson was named head coach in 2002.
Spencer shared offensive line coaching duties with Mike Sewak, who remains on the staff.
