Thanks to the joint efforts of Kathy Hemmings, one of our very hardworking volunteers, the GA SPCA staff, and several wonderful fosters, 13 homeless pups rescued from a junk heap are now safe and sound.
Piles of garbage, discarded tires, wood scraps - hardly a place you'd want to call home. But somehow two feral moms and 13 pups survived these inhospitable conditions, nestled in a hole in the foundation of a dilapidated house off Moreland Avenue.
Kathy, who often feeds strays in the area, realized that two of the pregnant dogs she had been feeding had recently given birth. Last week, she managed to rescue five 3-to-4 week old puppies herself, and returned on Sunday accompanied by Georgia SPCA staff to search for more. After several hours of work, they discovered and managed to dig the remaining eight puppies out of the hole.
All of the pups were severely flea and tick infested, but are now recovering and will soon be ready for adoption. Kathy and the staff were featured on the 11Alive news on Feb 6.
The "Baker's Dozen" will be in foster homes for a few weeks. Contact the shelter at 678-765-2726 or info@georgiaspca.org for adoption info.
