The city of Macon will host the Georgia Republican Party State Convention, starting this weekend on Friday, May 13th.
One of the big questions which will be answered is whether Sue Everhart will remain the chairman of the Georgia Republican Party. If Everhart is able to win another term, it would be her third as the party's leader.
Under Everhardt, Georgia Republicans have strengthened their hold on state politics and had recently swept all the statewide offices for the first time ever after the November 2010 midterm elections.
Everhart will receive a pair of challengers for the chairman job from Cobb and Fulton conservative activists, but it is a strong likelihood that Everhart will retain her seat as chairman..
With Republicans in control of the Georgia House and Georgia Senate, reapportionment is very likely to favor conservatives due to the fact that they control the process. Additionally, the prospect of Georgia having one more seat in the U.S. House of Representatives--due to the Census-- it will provide an opportunity to secure that district is likely Republican or solidly Republican.
Gingrich has been in politics for nearly four decades, but his rise to power began in the late 1980's. In March 1989, Gingrich won by 87 to 85 margin and became the minority whip which is one of his first formal positions of power. In 1995, he became the Speaker of the House and pushed his Contract With America in to the mainstream after the Republicans were successful during the 1994 mid-term elections.
