Georgia Republicans vote against Sandy relief bill

U.S. House of Representatives passed the Hurricane Sandy relief bill late Tuesday night 241 to 180 without a single vote from Georgia Republicans.

The final vote from the GOP was 179 for it and 49 against it. Democrats voted 192-1 in favor.

The Sandy relief bill is an aid package designed to provide emergency relief and structural repair for the disaster region hit by the hurricane more than two months ago on October 29, 2012.

But the House Republicans complained that the $50.7 billion package was full of unnecessary spending, unrelated to the disaster. As a result, 92 amendments were proposed to offset spending but the House Rules Committee approved only 12.

The bill now heads to the Senate where it will be taken up next week when the upper chamber returns to work.
