A diabetic 9-year-old girl from Dallas, Texas, was found dead in 2008 with candy and a cupcake by her side.
Chastity Butler had complained about a stomach ache the day before she died. She also had diarrhea and was vomiting, said the Huffington Post.
Although Butler’s glucose levels were extremely high, her mother, Georgia Jones, failed to take her to the hospital, said the Dallas Morning News.
Police arrested Jones in February 2009, charging her with endangering a child. This mother neglected her daughter and caused her to die of diabetic complications.
On Monday, close to five years after her daughter’s death, Jones was “sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty,” according to Morning News.
After Butler’s death, investigators began analyzing the child’s medical records and found out Jones had “skipped diabetes training in 2005, after her daughter's diagnosis.”
Police also discovered that Child Protective Services had been contacted in 2001 about Jones abusing her child. As a result, their family was investigated.
“In fact, just four days before the girl's death, CPS had inspected the home after hearing that Jones was not properly monitoring Butler's diabetes,” said the Huffington Post.
However, Butler was “upbeat” and was able to leave with her mother.
Jones has four other children. Now they will live with their grandmother since Jones will be in prison.
