It's the the nation’s first four-year public college founded in the 21st century, and it's right here in Metro Atlanta.
I'm talking about Georgia Gwinnett College and their spring athletic season begins this weekend with the first tennis match in school history. GGC is an NAIA school.
It all begins Friday as the Grizzlies take on SCAD in a dual meet.
The SCAD Bees, also an NAIA school, went 3-9 on the court last season and 2-4 in the Sun Conference.
The Grizzlies bring a nine-man lineup into the opening match, with five freshmen and four juniors.
Georgia Gwinnett head coach Chase Hodges brings a 246-92 (.728) career coaching record as he guides the program at GGC. He holds the distinction of being the first coach to guide five separate programs to a national ranking at the NCAA level.
Everyone affiliated with GGC athletics is excited about the tennis team and the spring sports season.
“Our program is very excited for our first match in school history,” says Hodges. “I expect a very competitive match against SCAD and I know our guys will be ready for the challenge.”
Nine matches are played in a dual meet, with three doubles points and six singles points available. Players may compete in both, and the team that earns five or more total points claims the match.
It appears Coach Hodges has talented teams for both the men ans the woman and this could be a program to watch.
“We are really pleased with the quality and depth that we’ve added to our young program,” said Hodges. “We are eager to begin action and our hope is that we can start both Grizzly programs off with great success this spring.”
The Grizzlies have 25 total matches currently scheduled between the men’s and women’s squads, featuring eight common opponents.
The Grizzlies next host NCAA Division III foe Covenant College on Saturday at noon at the GGC Tennis Facility.
Georgia Gwinnett College opened its doors in 2006 and is a member of the Association of Independent Institutions and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Office of Athletics’ core purpose is to develop lifelong leaders of character through academic and athletic excellence.
