Surrounded by several hospital professionals, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal signed the Hospital Medicaid Financing Program Act today to ensure funding for the state Medicaid program.
The new law replaces the “bed tax,” a very unpopular requirement for state hospitals to pay a fee to the state to keep the Medicaid program solvent.
The Hospital Medicaid Financial Program Act shifts the responsibility of levying the fee to the Department of Community Health (DSH).
The “bed tax” picked up a nearly $700 million tab for Medicaid and was set to expire in June of this year.
The legislation was introduced by Deal’s floor leaders in the House and Senate in just the second week of the session.
