Georgia Dems submit bill to keep employers from accessing employee social media

If you think that an employer in Georgia has no right to request your login information for Facebook, Twitter, or other social media applications, then you have some Democrat representatives in the Georgia House that agree with you.

Six House members (all Democrat) submitted HB 117 for consideration in the Georgia Assembly yesterday. It would prevent employers from asking their employees for those sorts of login credentials.

"A BILL to be entitled an Act to amend Chapter 1 of Title 34 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to general provisions regarding labor and industrial relations, so as to prohibit employers from requesting username, password, or other means of accessing an account or service for the purpose of accessing personal social media through an electronic communications device of employees or prospective employees with certain exceptions; to provide for penalties; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes."

The bill has been sent to the Industry and Labor committee within the House.

The primary sponsors of the bill are:

  1. Sandra Scott (D, 76th - Rex)
  2. Darryl Jordan (D, 77th, Riverdale)
  3. Shiela Jones (D, 53rd, Atlanta)
  4. Sharon Beasley-Teague (D, 65th, Red Oak)
  5. Tyrone Brooks (D, 55th, Atlanta)
  6. Keisha Waites (D, 60th, Atlanta)
