In Atlanta, Ga., a black pit bull named Russ curled up as he felt emotionally dejected in a cold, filthy kennel in a high-kill animal shelter. He seemed to know he would never leave by the front door; he wasn't very pretty with mange covering his once beautiful shiny coat.
Next to him was another dog, however and the brown boxer mix felt the desolation of his new kennel mate and cuddled close to Russ - as if to console Russ and silently assure him that their time together would be a few moments of comfort for both of them. The boxer gently laid his head upon Russ' back.
And this is the heartbreaking scene, and the picture sent to Angels Among Us, a nonprofit animal rescue in northern Georgia.
The experience described by Melissa witnessing the two dogs interact with each other with such tenderness and compassion motivated her to contact the rescue, who by her surprise agreed to help:
"When I sent the picture to Angels, never in my wildest dreams did I expect them to want to save Russ given all the strikes against him (his breed, his color, his skin issues, the high risk of illness given the exposure to disease at his young age, etc.). Not to mention the fact that we'd just loaded up the car with SEVEN dogs from this one shelter. Well, not only do they want to go back and save Russ, but they want to save his Boxer friend, too. They just can't imagine how his buddy would feel watching Russ leave and being left behind, all alone, waiting to die."
Angels Among Us will also need a local foster home in Georgia to care for the boxer. Please click here if you are interested in being a foster.
