George Zimmerman’s wife Shellie has filed for divorce, and on Sept. 6, 2013, she was seen speaking out on ABC’s “Good Morning America” about her relationship with George, calling him “selfish” and saying she “never really knew him.”
She said she stood by him through everything and stated she feels like he left her with a “bunch of pieces of broken glass…”
Shellie, 26, noted that it is only now that she is beginning to feel “empowered again.”
Less than one month ago, Shellie pleaded guilty to misdemeanor perjury, accused of lying about her family’s financial situation when she testified at her husband’s bond hearing last year in connection with the Trayvon Martin killing. She was sentenced to a year of probation for the crime.
George was eventually tried and acquitted in July regarding Trayvon's shooting death.
The Washington Post reports that in the divorce filing, she has requested she be given custody of the couple’s two dogs, while according to TMZ, she also wants a portion of any money George may garner due to a lawsuit against NBC.
TMZ also reports Shellie is getting over $4,000 a month from her husband’s legal defense fund.
According to CBS News, she is further asking George to pay for a life insurance policy making her the beneficiary.
The divorce documents say the couple separated sometime in August.
