George Washington’s face on Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota is usually seen in photographs head on. This face, as well as the ones of Lincoln, Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt are carved out of the granite on Mt. Rushmore. There is, however, a place on Road 244 that provides a most unique view of the first President of the United States. Route 244 circles around the entrance to the Mt. Rushmore National Monument.
You will see a fairly large parking area in the turn off on the side of the road. When you look up you can see the profile of George Washington at the top of Mt. Rushmore. This view is really different that you normally see in photographs. Looking at the faces of the four presidents head on is great. However, this angle on Washington’s face is really quite striking. It really is awesome seeing a huge face carved into the side of a granite mountain!
