The GW Post Treatment Breast Cancer Support Group meeting is held every 1st Tuesday from 6:00-7:30pm in the Cancer Center Board Room, GW Medical Faculty Associates Building, 2150 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W. DC on the 1st Floor. It is facilitated by Liz Hatcher, RN, Nurse Navigator who invited the author to attend its Tuesday, September 3, 2013 meeting to share information about and extend an invitation to the launch of the Cancer Survivor to Thriver Navigation Circle (CSTNC).
From the website calendar: “The post treatment breast cancer support group is open to all breast cancer survivors who have finished treatment. Speakers are present at most meetings.” There is also a Treatment Breast Cancer Support Group for those that are currently having breast cancer treatments.
Because breast cancer patients are surviving beyond the standard 5 year period into 10, 15, 20 and more years, there has been a shift to focusing more on survivorship and quality of life issues. Post treatment support groups are now addressing these issues even though more emphasis needs to be placed on integrating Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) modalities which have been shown to improve quality of life and increase positive health outcomes. The CSTNC will focus on CAM modalities and much more; the CSTNC article below provides more information about its launch.
