A documentary film, “JC Dobbs – Meet me on South Street” has been made by George Manney, longtime Philadelphia rock musician, Philly scene archivist, and now, film director.
The documentary covers the history of this iconic South Street bar from the period 1975-1996 when it featured many upstart musicians that went on to become famous such as George Thorogood, Nirvana, The Stray Cats, Bo Diddley and Green Day among countless others.
The bar has recently reopened as “The Legendary JC Dobbs” and continues to showcase local musicians regularly.
A live performance of George Thorogood is featured in the film, accompanied by a short television interview from 1980. Other live performances include the late Alan Mann, a staple Philadelphia rocker during Dobbs’ heyday.
There will be a screening at the Quad Cinema in New York at 34 West 13th Street on Friday, April 29, 2011 from 4 p.m. until 5:30. It is part of the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival.
“I’m hoping with this film festival screening we’ll get some recognition and spark some interest to have someone step forward to fund the film to have it released to a DVD,” said filmmaker George Manney.
Manney went on to say about JC Dobbs, “There was a closeness and great community there that nurtured the original new talent. It would be great if this film inspired future bands and club owners to nurture talent and make a community and spark a new JC Dobbs.”
