Set phasers to fabulous. Out actor George Takei, best known for his portrayal of Mr. Sulu in the acclaimed television and film series Star Trek, has a solution for teachers in Tennessee whom are now banned from discussing homosexuality or using the work “gay” in their classrooms. The actor has offered to lend his own name to the cause. He suggests, “Anytime you need to say gay, say Takei.”
“For example, you could safely proclaim you’re a supporter of Takei marriage. If you’re in a festive mood, you can march in the Takei Pride Parade. Even homophobic slurs don’t seem hurtful when someone says ‘that is so Takei!’”
State Sen. Stacey Campfield’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill passed the Tennessee Senate on Friday with a 20-10 vote. The bill operates under the misguided assumption that if you don’t say gay it will just disappear.
Mr. Takei has made a video announcing his solution that went viral within days. He has now started a line of T-shirts, buttons, mugs, etc with the slogan “It’s okay to be Takei.” They are available on his website. All proceeds go to charity.
For bringing some levity to a very sad situation and trying to bring about something positive, all I have to say to Mr. Takei is, LIVE LONG AND PROSPER.
