As some Rogue Valley soldiers are closer to finishing a deployment, coming home to their families and as the Oregon National Guard is preparing a "welcome home" ceremony later this month for our troops, George Mann is coming through Ashland to bring us a sampling of what some folk musicians have given our troops. "Until You Come Home: Songs for Veterans and Their Kin" is George's latest CD and it is a compilation of some of the very best folk and labor singers in the United States today.
The CD opens up with Mann's "Streams of Gold" which is a promise. The fifteen tracks that follow will take the listener on a journey towards a greater understanding of the real cost of war and closer to a resolution. With incredible songs by artists such as David Rovics, Holly Near, Magpie, John Gorka, Arlon Bennett, Laurie MacAllister and Amy Speace, Emily Nyman, Tom Paxton, Rodney Brown, Eric Schwartz, Jon Brooks and Walt Cronin, listeners are sure to find both new and old favorites. It seems right that we hear the rich clear voice of Utah Phillips who sings "Yellow Ribbon". And of course there is Julius Margolin's piece on "Endless War". You can listen to some samples of the CD and purchase at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/mannmargolin.
Mark Ross is a Eugene, Oregon based folk singer/musician who is an accomplished performer in his own right. You can hear some of his work at http://www.lehnherr.com/butte/.
George Mann and Mark Ross will be performing live on Thursday, April 15 at 8 PM at the Caldera Taphouse (31 Water Street in Ashland). George Mann's CD's including "Until You Come Home: Songs for Veterans and Their Kin" will be available for sale the night of the concert. This concert is sponsored by Southern Oregon Jobs With Justice. Tickets are by donation and the suggested donation is just $5-10. As always with Jobs With Justice events, nobody is ever turned away at the door due to inability to pay, so if cost is a financial hardship, come anyway!
