Former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, were the official witnesses at a same-sex wedding of two longtime friends in Maine over the weekend, according to The Washington Post on Sept. 26. Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen asked the former first couple to not only attend but perform the special honor, and they posted the photo on Facebook.
The couple attended the event as private citizens who had known Clement and Thorgalsen for many years. The new couple owns a general store near Kennebunkport, Maine, where the Bush family has long maintained a family compound.
Same-sex marriage has been legal in Maine since December 2012. The Bushes’ attendance at this ceremony was clearly established as a private event by their spokesperson, although most observers would see it as a somewhat obvious endorsement of same-sex marriage.
While Dick Cheney, Laura Bush and daughter Barbara have various degrees of support to same-sex marriage, George W. Bush, who stood against it as president, has refused to comment.
