On Tuesday, June 7th, George “Doc” Thompson passed away at his home in Auburn, New York. Dr. Thompson, the English Professor turned Law Enforcement Officer and 2nd Degree Black Belt in Judo, made it his mission to elevate the professionalism and communication skills for crisis professionals.
Dr. Thompson’s work, Verbal Judo, has impacted the lives and safety of hundreds of thousands of Law Enforcement Officers, First Responders, and other Crisis Intervention Professionals. His impact didn’t stop there; his ideas, skills and training have also made a big impact on the martial arts world in the fight against bullying and harassment.
The original Verbal Judo, designed to help professionals verbally redirect negative behavior and avoid physical conflict, has also become a powerful tool in the fight against bullying. The verbal and mental skills he developed for Police Officers have been translated and adapted so that children can be taught how to become “bully-proof”. The Verbal Judo for Youth program that grew from the original program has literally changed the lives of millions of children all over the country. I have personally seen the positive impact the Verbal Judo for Youth program can have, even in the lives of adults.
Dr. Thompson was a man who truly cared. His was a mission of peace, a mission to reduce violence through the use of understanding, courtesy, and respect for others. His work will continue. Verbal Judo will continue to be taught to professionals and the anti-bullying/harassment programs will continue to be taught through martial arts schools around the world. The martial arts and law enforcement communities have lost a great man, but the legacy he leaves us is one of empowerment and safety in the face of violence of all types. Thank You “Doc”.
