After their two-year romance, George Clooney, 50, and Italian girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis, 32, have announced their relationship is over.
The statement was short and to the point. “We are not together anymore,” it read. “It’s very difficult and very personal and we hope everyone can respect our privacy.”
The split happened after an interview earlier this month when Canalis, 32, told Chi, an Italian weekly magazine, "I could never be with someone who every time he opens his mouth says he doesn’t want a child with me or to marry me."
Canalis also said that she is a “firm believer in marriage” saying, "My boyfriend has not given an interview on his private life since 1999 – everything that you read is just a rehash of stuff that has been written in the past."
It was during an interview with Piers Morgan in January when Clooney told ‘Piers Morgan Tonight” just how he feels about marriage.
When Morgan pointed out that George's father, Nick had been married to George’s mother Nina for 50 years, Nick turned to his son and said, “I want you to think about that. I want you to think about -- we've been married -- Nina and I've been married 51 years." Clooney fired back, "I hate to blow your whole news story, but I was married," George told Morgan on the show. "Yeah, so I've proven how good I was at it, and I just ... I'm allowed one," He was referring to his marriage to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993.
Some of Clooney’s other girlfriends have been Kelly Preston who is now married to John Travolta. While the two say they were just friends, Clooney has been seen publicly with Renee Zellweger. Clooney also dated British model Krista Snowdon on and off for five years. Another romance was with Fear Factor winner Sarah Larson back in 2007.
On numerous occasions Clooney has said he will never marry and doesn’t want children. Considering Clooney is now 50, raising a family might seem a bit daunting for him.
