Geography fun for young homeschoolers

Hands-on geography fun!
Hands-on geography fun!

When it's time for your young homeschooler to learn the continents and oceans of the world, memorization can be a bit dry and boring. Here is a way to make it fun, and provide lots of review!

Purchase a simple world map poster. Cut out the continents and the ocean labels. Attach a magnet to the back of each piece and arrange them correctly on your refridgerator or other large magnetic surface. That's it!

Now you and your child can mix up and correctly arrange the continents and oceans, and name them as you go! If you keep a small world map nearby, such as in a lower kitchen cabinet, your child can work on this activity independently and check his/her work.

You can purchase the map posters at your local education store. Some large bookstores may have these as well. You can purchase a roll of self-stick magnetic tape, which can be cut into squares to fit the back of your map pieces, at any store that has office supplies.

In the Knoxville area, we have several education stores:

The Teacher Supply Depot is located on the second floor of the former Cedar Bluff Intermediate School (709 N Cedar Bluff Rd).

The School Box is located at 260 Morrell Rd.

The Teacher's Pet is located 226-2 Collier Dr in Sevierville.
