Queensryche, featuring Geoff Tate, played the Canyon Club, August 3, to an enthusiastic crowd of fans and long-time supporters of Tates’s Queenryche as they wind down their farewell tour. The lead vocalist of Queenryche since its inception will relinquish the name and after the tour will go into the studio and record an album under the new band name Operation:Mindcrime.
Operation: Mindcrime, named after the 1988 concept album, will consist of Geoff Tate, Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake), Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio), Randy Gane (Myth) and Kelly Gray (Queensryche 1998-2001, 2012-Present). Almost immediately after the tour they will go into the studio and begin recording Geoff’s two year-long trilogy project.
According to the press release from The Albright Entertainment Group, the upcoming trilogy album will be “the biggest and most ambitious works to date.” Geoff said, “I tried to reduce the story and eventually got it down to 37 ideas that needed representing to complete the story. I knew that one record would not cover it and that it would have to be a trilogy.” The trilogy album’s first part is scheduled for release next spring.
Tate, as both a storyteller and master showman, has sold over 20 million albums worldwide and performed in 46 countries. The release of the album Operation:Mindcrime won critical acclaim and was compared to Tommy and The Wall. If anyone has seen Geoff Tate perform, they understand that he is more than just a heavy metal vocalist; he’s both performer and actor with the vocal ability of a classically trained opera singer.
Sunday night’s performance hit all the right notes with the concerted efforts and exemplary musicianship of Robert Sarzo on guitar, Randy Gane on keys, Kelly Gray on guitar, Simon Wright on drums, and John Moyer on bass. After the show we got a chance to go backstage and meet with the band and they were noticeably pleased with their performance and ready to finish the tour and move on to the next chapter. We wish them well and look forward to Operation: Mindcrime.
