Geoff Johns’ highly-acclaimed run on Aquaman will come to an end after the Death of a King arc. In an interview with IGN, Johns talked about his love of the character and how he’ll still be working with Aquaman and Mera in the pages of the Justice League. The shocker is when he also seemed to hint that we could see the King of the Sea in a different medium before long.
When asked what his hopes for Aquaman were as a character both in comics and possible other mediums, Geoff Johns seemed to hint that something is at least being talked about and Arthur could be making the leap from page to screen:
I think Aquaman’s one of the most well-known heroes in the world. Aquaman #5 and #6 outsold every Marvel comic those respective months. Aquaman has the ability to be a huge character and I think we really brought him to a new level in comic books, and I’m hoping that new level continues to everything that is DC Entertainment. Certainly that’s the goal. He’s one of our most recognizable and most important characters, and it’s going to continue to stay that way.
Johns points out that taking the character to a new level in everything that is DC Entertainment. You don’t call Aquaman one of the most well-known heroes in the world without having some plans to take him outside of the pages of the comics. Rumors are Aquaman could be the focus of a new DC animated film, but could Johns be hinting at something even larger than that? Could there be another cartoon, a different animated film, or even something more along the lines of a live action film be in the works?
With DC already kicking their cinematic universe off with Superman and casting a new Batman, it’s only a matter of time before we hear about other characters being introduced. With Aquaman as one of DC’s flagship characters, it’s a safe bet that when that starts happening Aquaman will be one of the first few in line.
