The Station was a popular local rock and roll night club located a short distance from Providence, Rhode Island in the city of (West) Warwick. Once a restaurant, and eventually known as a spot to unwind and enjoy some entertainment, the club was a popular weekend destination for many. Unfortunately in early 2003, the popularity of the venue became national front page news when a fire caused by pyrotechnics during a performance engulfed the club, ultimately leaving little to no remains. One hundred patrons lost their lives, and hundreds more were injured during the escape. Amongst many loved ones lost, were 80’s rock band Great White's lead guitarist, Ty Longley, and the show's emcee and local radio station WHJY DJ, Mike "The Doctor" Gonsalves. As irony would have it, a local news cameraman and a news reporter (who was part owner of the club) were present that night to do a story on night club safety. After the trajedy, much legal action followed, and families are still dealing with their loss.
Today, at the location of the incident, a memorial still exists and consists of religious markings and personal items. In memoriam of those who perished and were injured, a geocache is also respectfully located on sight. There are also dozens of other caches in the general area.
