Geocaching Massachusetts: Geocaching and cleanup on Earth Day weekend

The 41st Earth Day was celebrated on April 22nd, 2011, and geocachers were there to lend a helping hand.

As natural disasters, oil spills, and nuclear power issues continue to cause difficult times for the environment - millions of acts of kindness are also helping to make things better.  In the geocaching community for example, scheduled CITO (Cache In Trash Out) cleanup events occured worldwide during the Earth Day weekend.  The focus - enjoying geocaching activities at favorite outdoor locations while lending a hand with trash cleanup and environmental maintenance.  If you missed a CITO event during the weekend, there are more on the way that could use a helping hand.

Some of the events scheduled this Spring in Massachusetts:

New Boston 4th Annual Litter Free Day; April 30 (GC2RWNX)
International CITO Day - Newton, MA; May 1 (GC2RRA2)
Den Rock Park - International CITO Weekend Event; May 1 (GC2NJGJ)
Purgatory Chasm spring cleaning; May 21 (GC2NFQQ)

Even if you don't attend an event, CITO can always be practiced, and every little bit helps.

Our geocaching and fishing activities for the Earth Day afternoon in South Eastern, Massachusetts found us picking up dozens of plastic cups, plastic bags, aluminum cans, and glass bottles. Something we routinely do when out caching.
