Geocacher name: geoheth
Real name: Geoff Heth
Lives in: Arbour Lake NW
Type of GPS unit I use: Garmin GPS Map60csx and an iPhone (paperless geocaching!)
I’ve been geocaching since: 2007
Favourite cache in the last 60 days: Arbour Lake Surprise GC20DXX
Favourite find: Our kids love finding caches in tricky places. We found one in Regina that was right out the back door of my sister-in-law’s place, but it took us a while to find. It wasn’t until my son got down at ground level and looked up that we were able to spot the camouflaged receptacle up in the spruce tree.
I usually cache with my: Family! We have 4 kids from 15 years old down to 8 years old and they love caching together.
I’ve logged caches in: Regina, Kamloops, Revelstoke, Vernon, Golden, Cochrane, Kelowna, Banff/Jasper Highway, Big Hill Springs Park, Bearspaw. We are taking a trip down to Minnesota this summer, and we hope to find caches all the way down and back.
The most difficult cache I’ve ever logged: We found a cache out on the Banff/Jasper Highway up at Bow Falls. The falls were beautiful and the cache was hard to find. It was a long hike for the kids but it was rewarding.
Most unusual place I’ve found a geocache: Right out in the open, just attached to a stake in the ground in the middle of a wetland park. The container was brilliant: it was the exact color of the metal stake. No one would’ve known it was a cache unless you were truly looking for it.
Most unusual container I’ve found: Our family really enjoys the different types of containers, especially natural looking containers that blend into the scenery. In Canmore we found a cache in a hollowed-out rock…very cool. We also found one that was a log hollowed out in the back. It just looked like a piece of wood on the ground. We circled it as a family a couple of times till my curious son flipped it over – BINGO!
A funny thing happened on the way to the cache: We were trying to get our friends into geocaching so we drove them to a spot and that had a long hike to the cache. We had an unreliable GPS and we walked all over the place for 45 minutes before giving up. We kept telling them “People do really hide stuff out in the bushes!” They nodded politely, but I am not sure they really believed us.
The best thing about geocaching is: The family time that we spend together and the fact that we all enjoy it. It doesn’t cost any money at all after you have a gps…so it is really cheap and fun. What an awesome combination!
