Genre categories for fiction are blending together. Just within the romance category there is Women's Fiction, Contemporary Romance, Sweet Romance, Historical Romance, Regency Romance, Romantic Suspense, Suspense with Romantic Elements, Urban Romance, Romantic Adventure, Paranormal Romance (which alone as a million and one subcategories to it) and the list goes on. Thrillers have Political Thrillers, Military Thrillers (which blend), Dark Thrillers, Techno Thrillers, Thrillers with Romance, yep, they do exist.
In a nutshell, Fiction Genres are blending together and in many ways this is a good thing. This leads me to my top Genre Bending must read fiction book for this year: DARK LEGACY by Anna DeStefano.
Thriller, Paranormal, Romance, Suspense--and it's edgy. Real edgy. It's different.
Editors and Agents are always telling writers they are looking for the same, but different. Hard to do. Yet, Anna DeStefano did it brilliantly with DARK LEGACY.
She uses dream theories, mixes in a bit of the paranormal, adds a dash of government conspiracy theory, and caps it off with an intense relationship between a heroine you want to root for and hero you want to take home. When I first heard what this book was about, I immediately thought of a few movies and books that seemed close in idea to the basic premise behind DARK LEGACY. Yet at the same time, it seemed so different from all them. It stood out, so I couldn't wait to get my greedy little hands on the book.
