On Tuesday August 20, Geno Smith was named a starter for the third preseason game against the Giants. In striking fashion, Geno had his best practice on Wednesday for the Jets. It’s noted that the rookie quarterback completed 15 of 16 passes. He completed his first 10 including two touchdowns according to CBSsports.com. Smith wants to take this performance with him for the rest of the week.
Due to an ankle injury in Smith’s first NFL action, he wasn’t able to participate in the second game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Instead, Mark Sanchez had his chance to play three quarters of the game. Now it will be Geno Smith receiving the bulk of the snaps on Saturday night.
The inconsistent performances by Mark Sanchez have kept the quarterback competition close. Otherwise, Smith’s injury would have doomed his chances to start week one. The big question is will Mark Sanchez get any reps against the Giants?
It’s a great sign for New York that Geno saved his best performance when practicing with the first team offense. All eyes will be waiting for Smith to prosper or fail on Saturday. If he shows the ability to play well against the Giants’ front seven, look out Geno being named opening day starter.
