Gennady Golovkin will knockout Andy Lee at Madison Square Garden

Irishman Andy Lee has emerged as the frontrunner to throw fists with Gennady Golovkin on April 26 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

“(Lee) is the only one right now either not pricing himself out, or having some other excuse why he can’t fight Gennady on April 26,” Golovkin trainer Abel Sanchez told World Boxing News on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs) last vacated the squared circle on February 1 after successfully defending the WBA and IBO middleweight belts versus an overwhelmed Osumanu Adama.

Golovkin, who has now recorded 16 consecutive knockouts, floored the 33-year-old Adama (22-4, 16 KOs) in the first and sixth rounds.

Sensing a beaten man, the powerful Russian mercilessly stalked Adama and again bullied the challenger to the canvas with a savage hook in the seventh frame.

Referee Louis Pabon compassionately halted the lopsided beating at 1:20 of the decisive round.

A punishing, ferocious and accurate slugger, Golovkin has never been toppled in over 375 scraps.

Conversely, the 29-year-old Lee (30-2, 21 KOs) earned a second round TKO over Hungarian Ferenc Hafner on November 23.

Lee, who was outscored by Golovkin at the 2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Bangkok, is a skillful and rugged prizefighter.

Plus, as a southpaw, the Irishman could pose problems for “GGG.”

Regardless of the outcome, Lee deserves ample credit for not making excuses “why he can’t fight Gennady on April 26.”

Unfortunately for the native of Limerick, Andy Lee is destined to get knocked onto Queer Street a couple of months from tonight in Gotham.
