Gennady Golovkin is ‘ready for the big names’

Gennady Golovkin and Osumanu Adama spoke Tuesday at a press conference held in Manhattan Beach, California.

Golovkin (28-0, 25 KOs) is set to defend the WBA and IBO middleweight belts against the 33-year-old Adama (22-3, 16 KOs) on February 1 in Monte Carlo.

A silver medalist as a middleweight at the 2004 Summer Olympics, Golovkin last vacated the squared circle in November after successfully safeguarding his crowns versus an overmatched Curtis Stevens.

“GGG” mercilessly stalked the 28-year-old Stevens (25-4, 18 KOs) and floored the challenger with a ferocious left in the second.

The bout was called at the end of the eighth round after Golovkin landed 293 punches and badly defaced Stevens.

“I am working hard every day for February 1 for Adama,” said Golovkin, 31, who has now recorded 15 consecutive knockouts. “He is a good fighter, a strong guy, not an easy fight. Every fighter is different. This is boxing. This is serious. I think it’s a good fight for us.”

Meanwhile, Adama most recently stopped Doel Carrasquillo following six rounds of action.

Adama, who amassed an amateur record of 54-4, is nothing more than an average prizefighter.

Accordingly, a ferocious and accurate slugger who has never once hit the canvas, Golovkin will quickly finish Adama and then seek a marquee opponent.

“First I will train for February 1. But, I am ready for the big names. I will fight everyone,” said Golovkin.

Facing Gennady Golovkin, Osumanu Adama will be in “serious” trouble from the outset and he’ll likely get knocked onto Queer Street within seven rounds next month.
