“General Hospital” may have lost Steve Burton recently, but fans can rejoice because another familiar face is set to return to the ABC soap. EW has confirmed on Jan. 8 that Genie Francis will be reprising her role as Laura Spencer. She will begin taping sometime this month while the episodes will start airing on Feb. 11. She will be there just in time to help celebrate the soap’s 50th anniversary coming up on April 1. However, no time limit has been mentioned as far as how long her stint will last.
Francis is most famous for being the other half of the Luke and Laura fame back in the day. That role is what made her a household name in the world of soaps. She came to “GH” as a young teenager back in 1977 and had been on again, off again until 2008. She joined “Young and the Restless” in 2011 but was let go from the role of Genevieve after only a year. It will be interesting to see how executive producer Frank Valentini will handle her return.
“I don’t know what the story is,” the actress told EW. “I have no idea, but Frank is very persuasive, energetic, infectious and has a sense of fun, a positive-ness that makes you want to work for the guy. He assured me there was going to be nice stuff to play. I am choosing to believe him!”
The 50-year-old actress has been gone from Port Charles for a while. She thinks it would be better to have an explanation as to why her character has been out of her children’s lives when they have needed her the most. Her three grown TV kids include Nicholas, Lucky and Lulu, who all have faced major difficulties without their mom around. The “GH” vet had expressed how she felt about this.
“It’s not for me to tell them how to run their show. But my biggest concern was that there had to be a good reason for me to stay away from my family,” she said.
Are you excited to have Genie Francis back on “General Hospital?” Should Luke and Laura get back together on the show?
