In a wonderfully dramatic blow today to the powers that are trying to force genetically modified foods onto the American consumers, several high profile food retailers have opted to not sell GMO salmon. The retailers taking a stand include Whole Foods, Aldi, and Trader Joe's when they signed on to the "Campaign for GE-free Seafood" and collectively they represent more than 2,000 stores nationwide.
The grassroots effort is working by the American people to let the FDA know that they have no interest in consuming GMO foods. The campaign released the following announcement today:
The FDA has stated it will likely not label genetically engineered salmon, providing consumers no way of knowing if the fish they are feeding their families is genetically engineered. At least 35 other species of genetically engineered fish are currently under development, and the FDA’s decision on this genetically engineered salmon application will set a precedent for other genetically engineered fish and animals (including cows, chickens and pigs) to enter the global food market.
The tightly controlled mainstream media has opted to gloss over this situation and even to avoid providing a link to the Friends of the Earth website where concerned consumers can educate themselves further on GMO foods.
Contrary to what the FDA, mainstream media, and others may think, the tide is indeed turning and congratulations go out to Whole Foods for taking a second major stand in as many weeks on this issue. Earlier this month, the grocery chain announced that they will label any GMO foods that disgrace their shelves by 2018.
Several alternative media outlets - including this column - are watching other food retailers and will be mentioning them by name should they opt to not take a stand on GMO foods for the simple reason that the consumer deserves to have the necessary information to ensure they know exactly what they are feeding their loved ones.
