A new life symbolizes a new beginning. On the August 21 episode of “General Hospital”, the birth of a child brought people together, reestablished bonds and inspired reflections about the importance of life. But as one life begins, other lives traveled further dow the path of destruction.
One of those lives is A.J. Quartermaine (Sean Kanan). His date with alcohol continued on Wednesday’s episode as Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) challenged his infidelity with booze by showing her loyalty to him. But she is part of the reason he is there as he tells her about seeing her in the arms of Nicholas (Tyler Christopher). A.J. at this point believes he is a failure, a Quartermaine deadbeat that no one should want, even Elizabeth, who continued to try to pull him out of his path of destruction. She told him that “it’s not to late” and that he has a chance to choose her over the alcohol. Not only did A.J. choose the alcohol, he pushed her away by bringing up Jake, her dead child. His cruelty towards Elizabeth caused her to slap him, but she also realized what he was attempting to do which was push her away by showing her the real A.J., but maybe he has yet to find the real A.J. himself. He has spent so much of his life trying to live up to the expectations of being a Quartermaine, that he has become a failure in his own eyes. If you feel worthless to yourself, how is anyone else going to see your worth. Elizabeth sees his worth, unfortunately A.J. has become blind to loyalty and usually decides not to see it even when it is clearly recognized. At the end of the episode, A.J. went back to the Quartermaine mansion, opened a safe and pulled out a gun, which suggests that he is going take things into his own hands, but who will get hurt in the process?
Ava Jerome (Maura West)has been a loaded gun since she came to Port Charles. Her intentions, whatever they truly are, has hurt her daughter Kiki (Kristen Alderson) the most emotionally. Kiki has been lied to all her life about her father, and now she has to live with yet another lie and another new father. At the hospital, Kiki finally was able to convince Franco (Roger Howarth) that he is not her father. Franco was confused and wanted to know why. Finally Ava entered and confirmed the truth. Perhaps, for the first time since she arrived, she showed some sort of vulnerability. She told both Kiki and Franco that everything she has done has been to protect her family. Kiki doesn’t believe her and told her to stay the “hell away from her family”, which now includes Morgan (Bryan Craig). Kiki is very angry at her mother, but Franco was distraught and angry. After Kiki left, Franco pulled Ava close to him and told him, if he hasn’t changed, if he is the same physchopath he was before the surgery that he will take his crazy out on her. In the words of Kiki, Ava stole redemption from Franco. Having a daughter and possibly saving Danny’s life was his reasonings for change and his way to prove to himself that he is a worthy human being. Now with all that taken away, will Franco be Franco again? At the end of the episode he took off from the hospital.
Meanwhile, a new life came into the world as Maxie gave birth to a baby girl. But before that Maxie had to have an emergency c-section. She panicked and wanted to tell Spinelli something before she was carted off to the operating room. She pleaded that she needed to talk to Spinelli in case something happened to her or the baby. Fortunately for Maxie she had many people there who care for her and was pulling for her. Lulu was her main strength. She was right there by Maxie’s side in the operating room, holding Maxie’s hand and telling her that they are an “unstoppable” force. It’s amazing that just years ago, these two women didn’t like each other and constantly tried to hurt one another. The bond they have created really showed yesterday, but with the truth Maxie is hiding about the baby will definitely test their bond. After the baby was born, they both cut the cord together. As both Spinelli and Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) looked own, Spinelli congratulated the new father as Maxie looked up at him before hemorrhaging.
Elsewhere in Port Charles, Tracy (Jane Elliot) talked to Connie (Kelly Sullivan) about their relationships. Tracy talked about Luke (Anthony Geary) and said she wants more than Luke can give her and she also encouraged Connie to fight for Sonny (Maurice Benard) because she is Sonny’s “Laura”. She also told Connie to watch her back regarding A.J. because he is looking for someone to blame. Luke and Laura (Genie Francis) arrived at the hospital to support Lulu. Later Luke asked Sonny to keep an eye on Lulu and their new grandchild when he’s not around. At the Quartermaine mansion, Carly (Laura Wright) urged Morgan to fix things. She also voiced her concern for Michael (Chad Duell) because of A.J.’s downfall and because of the exposed truth about Kiki which she fears will hurt both of her sons.
