A lie never ends well on a soap opera. When a truth is revealed, lives usually spin out of control and often times even gets destructive. On the August 20 episode of “General Hospital”, the result of Ava’s lie resulted in another lie and the truth sent A.J. into a downward spiral and Franco into a state of confusion.
A.J. Quartermaine (Sean Kanan) has always been the scarp goat. He is a flawed character who never seems to be able to win and is usually always trying to make up for past mistakes. When A.J. is disappointed or hurt, he self-destructs. As Tracy (Jane Elliot) pointed out to Elizabeth (Elizabeth Herbst) on Tuesday’s episode, “the one thing A.J. enjoys is destroying himself.” As she said those words, A.J. sat at the Floating Rib staring at his reflection from a shot glass. A.J. has vowed never to touch alcohol again but losing ELQ and disappointing his son Michael has sent him back into the comfort of a drink. His date with alcohol was temporarily interrupted by Ava (Maura West) who told him that she had her reasons for lying about Kiki’s (Kristen Alderson) true paternity. A.J. reflected on what Carly did to him by keeping him out of Michael’s life and how he was forced to sign away his rights. After a drink, he told Ava that Connie destroyed his life and that he is tired of people messing with him and getting away with it. He plans to take action. Ava egged him on by telling him that someone should destroy Connie. When Ava finally left, A.J. continued drinking until Elizabeth showed up. But can Elizabeth stop A.J.’s downward spiral? Or will his path of destruction cause more pain, particularly for those he loves?
Because Ava lied, Franco (Roger Howarth) woke up believing he had a chance at a real relationship with his daughter Kiki. After calling Silas (Michael Easton) into the room, Franco is quickly disappointed to find out that he is not a good donor for Danny because of cancerous cells. Franco was upset about the news because he really wanted to do something to show Kiki that he could be a good person. Silas, who just found out Kiki is his daughter, told Franco that Ava has been lying about something, but just as he was about to tell him the truth, Kiki walked in and told him that he is not her father which seemed to leave Franco confused.
Because Ava lied, Michael (Chad Duell) and Kiki believed they were cousins, and now that they know they are not and can actually be together, another lie is standing in their way. Morgan persuaded Kiki to marry him before she could find out she wasn’t a Quartermaine. He did this to keep his brother away from Kiki. When Kiki asked Morgan if he knew about the fact she wasn’t a Quartermaine, he lied and quickly turned the question around on her. He asked her if it would’ve mattered and reminded her of her vows and her promise to “love him for life”. Later Carly (Laura Wright) confronted Morgan and told him to stop what he is doing because it will only end in more hurt. She told him that she will help him but just as he was about to come clean, Michael walked in. Carly is trying to protect both her sons, but the hurt that will result may already be too deep to prevent.
At the hospital, Maxie (Kirsten Storms) developed complication while in labor. Once the doctor said the baby’s heart rate dropped, Maxie immediately thinks that she passed on a bad heart to the baby. The real complication is that the umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby’s neck, but it sent Maxie into a panic. Lulu (Emme Rylan) told Maxie that she couldn’t pass on anything to the baby because she does not share the same genetics. Truth is, the baby is actually Maxie’s baby and her panic almost gave away her hidden truth and also the fact that Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) is the actual father. It was good to see Spinelli there for her, even without him knowing he is the baby’s real father. A baby can bring two people together and it is clear that this baby is restoring the bond between Maxie and Spinelli. The only problem is, the truth will hurt many people. The overall theme of Tuesday’s episode focused on the importance of a child and the consequences of holding on to lies. The truth always comes out, and when it does, the result is a lot of pain and many changed lives.
Elsewhere in Port Charles, Mac and Felicia told Sonny that Morgan and Kiki were married. Connie told Tracy at ELQ that she plans on fighting for Sonny. Back at the hospital Olivia shared with Sonny that Dante had complications when he was born and that everything will be okay for their grandchild.
