Chicago genealogists, do you know David R. Dowell? Are you interested in DNA research to assist your genealogical research? Have you heard of his book Crash Course in Genealogy? Librarian, Genealogist, and Author, David R. Dowell will be visiting the Chicagoland area in November. Where can you see him? At the Bolingbrook Fountaindale Public Library!
David will be presenting Adding DNA Testing to your Genealogical Tool Kit. He will also be signing his book Crash Course in Genealogy.
Who is David Dowell? He has worked in the university library system for over 40 years. He is a part-time genealogical instructor and author. His book, Crash Course in Genealogy was published in June 2011. The book was written to help librarians feel more comfortable with genealogical resources, researchers, and tracing a family's history. Amazon.com's product description of the book states, in part,
"Beginning with library genealogical services policies, the guide moves on to cover genealogical research principles and most-used sources. It also illustrates how one can perform a search backward in time through American family history. The book includes information on researching people of color, taking research to another country, and adding DNA information to genealogical research. Examples from the author's decades-long experience as a genealogist enrich the text, while illustrations of census records and the like help readers understand the research process."
Debra Dudek, the Adult and Teen Services Manager at the Fountaindale Library had this to say about his book in July. You can read her entire review here.
"Originally intended as a basic genealogy training course for library staff, this book is a great introduction to genealogy subjects, resources, and research methodology. This book offers newbies a chance to begin their search without the daunting fear factor, but gives intermediate researchers a new way to look at their research. Dave’s breakdown of information into graphics, case studies, and additional resources is truly top-notch. His graphs and timelines really gave me a lot of insight into some of my own methodology."
Whether you are a beginning researcher or more advanced, visit your local library or bookstore to check out David's book. Then stop by the Fountaindale Library in November to meet him in person and hear his lecture.
