Gender Fluid: New Facebook gender options, 50 LGBT identity choices offered

Gender fluid is a trending term this week as an essential part of the new Facebook gender options provided to users on the popular social media site. With over 50 LGBT identity choices being offered to Facebook users, it’s understandable that for people in the gay community and beyond, gender fluid can be just one of the many potential confusing concepts. The Inquisitr reports this Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, that with the new gender options feature being officially launched this week, users now have the opportunity to better list themselves according to their “sexual identity.”

While gender fluid might initially sound a bit strange or even like a liquid bit of terminology at first, it is actually used as a choice in the new Facebook gender options as someone who is open to the “fluidity of thought.” A number of the 50 plus terms included in the recent feature might be familiar to those in the LGBT community, but others can come off as puzzling to people from all walks of life.

These new gender options on Facebook were formally created by Brielle Harrison, a well-known software engineer and an individual in the process or preparing to change his identity from that of a man into a woman. According to his thoughts behind the latest technological functionality, including choices like gender fluid:

“All too often transgender people like myself and other gender nonconforming people are given this binary option, do you want to be male or female?… it’s kind of disheartening because none of those let us tell others who we really are… for the first time I get to go to the site and specify to all the people I know what my gender is.”

As such, it makes much sense to realize that gender fluid is one of the new gender options provided on Facebook. Aimed to reference the notion of thought fluidity, the term applies to people who self-identify as someone who cannot fully decide what their sex is, or are in the process of changing between genders (in a fluid-like manner). However, some websites instead say that the open-ended term signifies an individual who has a dynamic blend of qualities common of both a girl and a boy, showing that the very form of identification is not set in stone.

“There are also an interesting number of the 50 plus other terms that a majority of people are probably unsure of. For example, FTM isn’t an affront directed towards men, but it actually describes a female that changed their identity to that of a male. Relatedly, MTF is male to female. Another terminology, neutrosis, suggests a neutral gender, which is linked to the term non-binary (the term binary itself points to the idea that there only two options). Transmasculine describes those who are physically born as females, but ultimately identify as more male than female.”

Some other different terms like gender fluid include two-spirit, a Native American religious orientation that has frequently been used for years before the Facebook gender options ever became publicly known. This means that an individual can have a female spirit as well as a male spirit within their person, but these spirits might contrast with one another — from that of a Clan Mother or symbolizing varying animal spirits.
