There's a song called "Anything is Possible." And when it comes to former "Baywatch" actress Gena Lee Nolin, it's clear that musical lyrics have met reality. The actress known for her sexy body is using her own experience with thyroid disease to help others.
In an interview with ABC, Gena talked about how she's championing women's health in a new book: "Beautiful Inside and Out: Conquering Thyroid Disease with a Healthy, Happy, "Thyroid Sexy" Life" (click for details).
Gena is concerned that, based on her own battle with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, many sufferers do not initially make the connection between their symptoms and the disease. And their physicians also sometimes fail them.
Among the symptoms: Weight gain, hair loss, lethargy and depression.
“It is a lonely invisible, disease,” reflected Gena. “The weight gain, the anxiety- I wasn't myself.”
Initially diagnosed with postpartum depression, Gena traveled a long, lonely journey before discovering others who shared her condition.
“Almost 60 thousand joined the (Facebook) page," said Gena. “Ninety percent are women, which to me with my career having to wear the red suit - and by the way, the sexy part was almost a rebellious punch. It was the most unsexy I had ever felt.”
