Gen Y Gives Thanks: Professional growth through volunteering

As a whole, Generation Y has embraced the concept of volunteerism.    Sometimes seen as merely last resort when college graduates can’t find a job, but Millennials are making volunteering a priority

The Corporation for National & Community Service reports the average national volunteer rate for Millennials was 21.2 percent per year between 2007 and 2009.  Their ambition isn’t just benefiting their communities.  Volunteering benefits Millennials.

Millennials like 24-year-old Laura Kimball, a freelance social media strategy consultant in Seattle, is grateful for what she’s learning as a volunteer with Jolkona, a startup nonprofit that specializes in micro-donations.

“Jolkona’s leadership team is amazing.  It is made up of seven 20- and 30-somethings who have full-time jobs and are skills-based volunteers. Their ideas, their dedication and their passion constantly inspire me. I am honored and grateful to work with them and help launch such an amazing organization.”

Kimball thinks volunteering provides professional opportunities not readily available in most business environments.

“Startups and nonprofits offer an invaluable opportunity to anyone who’s looking to change careers or strengthen their professional and personal brands. As part of this team, I’ve been offered a level of autonomy and empowerment that’s rare in most business environments.”

But, for Kimball, the professional development volunteering provides is really just gravy.  The best part is knowing she is making a difference.

“I’m able to create a position that I’m passionate about, doing what I love—connecting and building partnerships with people—and know that my work is making a true impact in the world. For that I am thankful.”

We would be in less a state of hurt if more Americans adopted the spirit of Gen Y and gave back. Too many Boomers made it and do not care about the less fortunate.
