Next weekend ( March 23-24) will be the Gem City Comi-Con 2013. It is being held at a new location this year, the Nutter Center! I attended the event last year and really enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing it in a larger location.
This year the featured guests include Howard V Chaykin, best know for his work on the title “American Flagg!”. Also featured is the indie creator Stan Sakai famous for his own creation Usagi Yojimbo, the samurai rabbit, which has been regularly published since 1984.
For those who have never been to one, comic conventions are great places for fans of comic books, sci-fi, fantasy, and all kinds of gaming to meet up. Vendors and dealers from all around also come to sell their wares, so if you are looking for a hard to find title or collectable it’s a good idea to check out the dealer’s room. Independent creators and artists also bring their titles and hand made crafts to sell to visitors. It’s always good to try something new that profits the artists directly.
This year will also feature the first Cosplay contest at the Gem City Comic-con. The event will be hosted by professional cosplayer Phoenix Kasai. Anyone who attends in a costume of any kind will get free admission to the Con. Cosplay is when fans dress up like their favorite characters from movies, TV shows, games or comics. Contests usually judge a cosplayer on the craftsmanship of their costume and their ability to portray the character. Check out the website for specifics or email info@gemcitycomiccon.com with any questions you have.
