The Farm to Table skit is one of the most popular and most remembered "Portlandia" skits. It is so popular that for the third season of the show, IFC aired a Geico commercial before Friday's episode featuring Maxwell the Pig sitting at a table wanting to know all about the food and where it came from according to the Ad Week report on Jan. 11. The commercial is called Piglandia and mocks Portland's trend for eating local, organic food.
The Geico ad will run on IFC for all 10 episodes of the third season of "Portlandia". While some may find the commercial offensive, Horizon Media, IFC, Geico, and The Martin Agency were all collaborators on making the commercial what it is.
This isn't the first time that Geico has tailored their commercials to an upcoming cable program. 2012, Geico made a caveman commercial for History Channel's "Hatfield's and McCoy's". The Horizon representative that helped create the commercial claims that the goal of "Piglandia" was to stand out in a saturated market and appeal to fans using something they already enjoy.
Do you think their ad tactic worked?
