Here we are back again with some great reads that have either come out or are just coming out. Just what you needed to get your summer reading list started. Do you have other books on your list already? What are they? Share your selections below in the Comments section and maybe you will inspire someone else to pick it up.
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente, Ana Juan (Illustrator). This is the first e-book to win the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy, and called a “glittering confection” by Publisher’s Weekly, who also said that it is one of those books “one doesn’t want to put down.” It is the story of 12-year-old September, who goes on an adventure that rivals Dorothy’s and Alice’s, to retrieve the witch’s spoon from the horrible marquess of Fairyland. Homage is paid to such figures as Tolkien and Miyazaki. Be sure to watch the enchanting video included with this article.
2030: The Real Story of What Happens to America by Albert Brooks. Many of you may recognize the name Albert Brooks from such movies as Defending Your Life and Broadcast News, but now Brooks has come out with his first book. It is a futuristic look at what happens in America when the country is on the brink of bankruptcy and pushed over the edge by a natural disaster. What would happen if the government was simply unable to respond? Would America collapse or would it find a rallying point to pull itself back together?
Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi. Here is the latest from this 24/7 journalist, blogger, and novelist. Scalzi takes readers to Zarathustra where Zaracorp is given the rights to do whatever it wants as long as there are no sentient beings on the planet. Low and behold there are, and they are referred to as Fuzzies, cute little creatures who are more than capable of emotions and thought. Will Zaracorp be able to quietly eliminate the problem, or is there an unplanned fight brewing that they may very well lose? Check out the Fuzzy Man tribute sing in Youtube.
The Last Zombie: Dead New World by Brian Keene, Fred Perry (Artist). Keene is back with more zombies, but this time with a young adult novel. Zombies have pretty much come and gone, but the disease still exists to infect the living. On top of that, wild animals now outnumber the living, searching for food, taking it anyway they can from the human scavengers. One survivor is on a mission to find his lady love. He is in California and she is in New York. Will he make it there in one piece and still among the living and breathing?
