Geeks are coming together at the Sacramento Scottish Rite this Saturday

This Saturday will mark the first workshop to be held by the Nerd Institute, with a range of panels, fan groups, and vendors. Attendees will learn to create hard and soft costumes, props, and generally learn about media arts and the comic industry.

The event is going to be at Sacramento’s Scottish Rite Masonic Center this Saturday, March 9th, from 10am until 4pm. Featuring six different panels, speakers will include comic legend Ron Lim (Silver Surver, X-Men, Green Lantern), costumers and fabrication experts Ryan Goff, Brian Schaubmayer, and Eva Vanecek. Discussions will also include Photography, the regional Costuming Fan Clubs, and tips for becoming a Collector.

Event coordinator Mark Chu-Lin of Sacramento said, “This event is designed to be low-key. An opportunity for fans of all ages can come together and learn some of the skills and concepts that can help them create costumes of their own and learn more about the convention scene and the community that has grown up around it.”

A number of fan groups will also be in attendance, including costuming focused groups like the 501st (Star Wars), Avengers Initiative, and The Finest (G.I. Joe), the R2 Builders club for those who have an interest in robotics, and the Sacramento Brick Builders (for fans of Legos).

“It should be a great time for people to come and discover some of the great organizations and talent in the fan community that exist around Sacramento,” Mark continued.
